Around 12K Haitian migrants released in US - DHS head

United States Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas (pictured) admitted that approximately 12,000 illegal immigrants from Haiti who were held under a bridge at Del Rio, Texas have been released into the country.

"Approximately, I think it's about 10,000 or so, 12,000," Mayorkas told Fox News in an interview, adding that the number could grow once all cases are reviewed. The DHS head revealed that another 3,000 have been detained, while 5,000 others are currently being processed by the agency.

The US government has been facing a surge of migrants at the US-Mexico border leading to a growing humanitarian crisis, largely blamed on the current administration's catch-and-release processing tactic.
