US closes lower as debt ceiling talks continue

Major stock markets in the United States closed lower on Thursday, as investors follow the ongoing discussion in Washington DC on the country's debt ceiling. The White House blasted what they saw as Republican obstructionism, saying that the party is "playing politics with an economic catastrophe."

Meanwhile, Congress did manage to pass a continuing resolution to fund the government until December 3, while discussions on infrastructure and social spending bills have hit new walls.

The Dow Jones closed 1.59% or 547 points in the red, with Walgreens falling 3.41%. The Nasdaq 100 was down by 0.43% at the end of the session. as Ross Stores dropped 5.29%. The S&P 500 finished the day 1.19% lower, led by CarMax's decline of 12.61%. The euro lost 0.12% to the dollar trading for $1.15831 at 4:01 pm ET.
