Blinken, Macron meet in Paris - report

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Tuesday, according to a senior State Department official. The meeting marked the most senior-level discussions between the two nations since the AUKUS submarine deal announcement and ensuing diplomatic rift.

The one-on-one meeting was not on Blinken's official schedule but was described by the official as "serious" and "very productive." The parties agreed that work is needed on fixing the relationship but that the meeting was an opportunity to "deepen and strengthen coordination." Counterterrorism cooperation in Africa's Sahel region was discussed along with European defense and security initiatives, with Blinken expressing support as long as NATO is not undermined.

Blinken traveled to France to meet with Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and national security adviser Emmanuel Bonne, as well as to attend Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) meetings.
