Sony, TSMC discussing building joint chip plant - report
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) and Sony Group Corporation are exploring the possibility of a joint investment of about ¥800 billion ($7 billion) with the aim of constructing a semiconductor plant in Japan, Nikkei Asia reported on Friday.
The factory would be built on Sony-owned land in Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu in Japan's southwest, according to unnamed sources, who also specified that the facility will primarily focus on making chips for camera image sensors and vehicles.
The plant, expected to become operational in 2023 or 2024, will likely receive subsidies from the Japanese government due to Tokyo's worries about supply chain issues, the semiconductor shortage and Taiwan Strait tensions, the report claimed.
