Macron: France to delay sanctions as UK talks continue

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday his country will not impose retaliatory measures against the United Kingdom over their fishing dispute at midnight as the two sides are currently in negotiations on the issue.

"We're not going to put sanctions in force while we negotiate," Macron stated. "We'll see where we are at the end of tomorrow to see if things change," he added.

Earlier, France warned the UK it will impose tougher checks on vessels and trucks coming from the UK in response to the UK limiting access to its territorial waters to small fishing vessels from the European Union unless Britain approves more licenses for French fishermen by the start of November. Meanwhile, the UK threatened to respond in "a calibrated and proportionate" way if France goes ahead with its threats.
