UK: Cyberattacks on Britain reach new record

The British National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), a department of the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), revealed in its report published on Wednesday that cyberattacks on the United Kingdom's public institutions have reached a new record of 777 in 2021.

The NCSC said multiple attacks came from the so-called "hostile states" Russia and China. It also noted that the primary target was the University of Oxford's data on the vaccine against COVID-19 it was developing with AstraZeneca PLC. Additionally, the document highlighted an increase in the number of ransomware and supply chain attacks.

"We can see technology leadership is shifting eastwards. The key technology we will rely on for future prosperity and security won't necessarily have democratic values at its core. We will work with partners around the world to help the UK and allies face this moment of reckoning," GCHQ Director Sir Jeremy Fleming commented.
