EU to fund returns from Belarus with up to €3.5M

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Tuesday that the European Union will mobilize up to €3.5 million to support voluntary returns of migrants from Belarus. She added a watchlist has been proposed for all means of transport in order to curb the trafficking and smuggling of migrants.

Von der Leyen also said that "several airlines and civil aviation authorities have stopped unwarranted travel to Belarus. Furthermore, Iraq has begun repatriating nationals stranded in Belarus." The EU is also working with UN agencies to provide humanitarian support to migrants stranded on the border with Belarus. She noted the union will assign €6.4 billion in its new budget for managing its borders. In addition, around €1 billion per year in funding for the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) and the Commission proposed to triple the funds currently earmarked for Lithuania, Latvia and Poland.
