Dow plunges nearly 1,000 points on fresh COVID worries

Wall Street extended losses on Friday with the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunging nearly 1,000 points amid fears related to the detection of a new COVID-19 strain. South African scientists who discovered the new strain warned it could evade immune responses triggered by existing coronavirus vaccines.

The Dow Jones slid 2.55% at 10:22 am ET, minutes after hitting a session low of 34,805.88 points. The worst performers were American Express and Boeing whose shares tumbled 8.22% and 7.57%, respectively, at 10:18 am ET.

The Nasdaq 100 fell 1.27% at 10:23 am ET with Pinduoduo, down over 16%, leading the losses.

The S&P 500 dropped 1.84% at 10:24 am ET. Occidental Petroleum, Live Nation Entertainment and APA Corp all lost more than 12%.

The euro rose 0.83% against the dollar to sell for 1.13008 at 10:27 am ET.
