Johnson details UK's plan to fight Omicron COVID strain

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told the media about the Cabinet's course of action after the country confirmed its first case of the new Omicron coronavirus variant.

He noted that the mutant strain appears to be spreading more rapidly and can affect people who are double-vaccinated, which may reduce the protection of vaccines over time. "We have to take targeted and proportionate measures now as a precaution," Johnson stated.

The prime minister said that all travelers will have to self-isolate after their arrival before getting a negative PCR test and that all contacts of those who test positive will have to self-isolate for two weeks "regardless of their vaccination status." Johnson went on to urge British citizens to get their booster shots and wear face coverings in indoor areas.
