Existing jabs likely less effective against Omicron - Moderna CEO

Moderna Inc. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Stephane Bancel (pictured) stated on Tuesday he expects the already developed vaccines against COVID-19 will be less effective in their response to the Omicron strain of the virus in comparison with how they have been with the Delta variant.

"I think it's going to be a material drop. I just don't know how much because we need to wait for the data. But all the scientists I've talked to [...] are like, 'This is not going to be good,'" he told the Financial Times. Bancel previously said Moderna will need between two and six weeks to probe the effectiveness of its treatment against the Omicron variant.

Earlier, Pfizer Inc. CEO Albert Bourla expressed his belief the company's oral medicine against COVID-19 will be effective against the new strain. Meanwhile, Russia's Gamaleya Research Institute asserted it is working on a new vaccine aimed specifically at combating Omicron.
