EMA head doesn't know if new vaccines needed for Omicron

Executive Director of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) Emer Cooke stated on Tuesday that the agency doesn't know if new coronavirus vaccines will be needed for the Omicron virus variant.

On the other hand, Cooke insisted that EMA is prepared for the variant, adding that the agency has contingency plans for potentially fast-tracking approval of Omicron-specific coronavirus vaccines.

With the emergence of the new variant, pharmaceutical companies warned that existing vaccines may be less effective, while also noting that more data is needed. Meanwhile, some have already started looking into new vaccines to specifically target the strain.
