Greece: Virus vaccination mandatory for over 60s

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Tuesday that his government has decided to make the immunization against COVID-19 mandatory for all the nation's citizens over the age of 60.

Mitsotakis explained that those from that group that have not yet received a vaccine must file an application for their first shot by January 16 or pay a fine of €100 every month. Those funds will later be used to finance medical institutions, he added. The prime minister also noted that, despite the high rate of vaccination in Greece overall, the percentage of the elderly inoculated in the past period remains low.

"It is a decision that tormented me personally. However, I feel a heavier responsibility to stand by the most vulnerable, even if they may be temporarily unhappy. I have absolutely no doubt that our political decision will save human lives," Mitsotakis told reporters. The decision comes shortly after Greece introduced new restrictions for unvaccinated citizens to curb the further spread of coronavirus.
