Germany's HDE blames restrictions for sales drop

German retail association Handelsverband Deutschland (HDE) released a statement on Sunday in which it attributes "significant losses for retailers" to tightened COVID-19 measures.

HDE Managing Director Stefan Genth said that "the introduction of stricter corona measures in shops is a dramatic turning point in the Christmas business. In the week before the second Advent, sales and frequencies dropped noticeably ... now many traders are moving closer to the edge of their existence every day, a catastrophic outlook."

The statement comes on the same day as Germany's incoming travel minister warned against big gatherings and travel during the Christmas period.
