Walensky: FDA may streamline jab approval

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky said on Sunday that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering streamlining the authorization of any Omicron-specific vaccine.

Speaking to the ABC, Walensky confirmed that the FDA was "already in conversations about streamlining the authorization of this, of an Omicron-specific vaccine, partially because much of the vaccine is actually exactly the same and really, it would just be that mRNA code that would have to change."

Vaccine producers were quick to announce they were testing effectiveness against Omicron once news of the variant broke, with Pfizer/BioNTech stating an aim to respond to any variant within six weeks of discovery. Novavax has also announced an Omicron-specific vaccine set to be ready in January 2022.
