Deposed Myanmar leader sentenced to 4 years in prison

Myanmar's ousted State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi (pictured front) has been sentenced on Monday to four years in prison over incitement against the military and breaking coronavirus-related rules.

A special junta court handed down the sentence. Suu Kyi has been under house arrest since she had been removed from office during the military coup in February and is still facing more charges that could carry a maximum of 100 years of jail time, according to western media. The military authorities that are now controlling the country also sentenced Myanmar's deposed President Win Myint to four years in prison.

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners in Myanmar estimates that over 1,300 people have been killed and that more than 10,000 have been arrested so far in protests against the coup.
