Europe closes mostly lower amid Omicron doubts

Shares on the major European stock market benchmarks traded mostly in the red as the session came to a close on Wednesday, with the investors seemingly still in two minds regarding the nature of the threat that the COVID-19 Omicron variant poses for the economy.

While both the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and the World Health Organization hinted that the new strain could cause milder symptoms than its predecessor, the number of infections throughout the continent remained high.

The DAX dropped 0.8% at the close as HelloFresh tumbled 10.92%. The CAC 40 concurrently declined by 0.72%, led by Hermes International's 2.59% plunge. At the same time, in London, the FTSE 100 stood flat. The euro jumped 0.58% versus the dollar, selling for 1.13311 at 5:31 pm CET, while the pound slid 0.1% compared to the greenback, going for 1.32303 a minute later.
