China adds 206 daily COVID cases, most since April 2020

The Chinese National Health Commission (NHC) said on Sunday that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country grew by 206 since the previous update, marking the highest daily jump in infections since April 2020.

The NHC noted that 158 of the cases were locally transmitted, while 48 were imported. All but one of the locally transmitted infections were registered in the northwestern province of Shaanxi. Meanwhile, no new COVID-related deaths were reported in the Country.

Earlier this week, Xi'an, the capital city of the Shaanxi province with a population of over 13 million, enforced a lockdown in an attempt to contain the virus. Under the new rules, only one member of each household is allowed to leave home every two days to buy essential items, while no resident is allowed to leave the city unless they are granted approval from officials due to extenuating circumstances.
