Guterres commends nuclear-five's vow to avoid arms race

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed five of the world's most powerful nations's joint pledge to avoid a nuclear war, Guterres Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric revealed in a statement.

Guterres "appreciates" the nations wanting to comply with their "bilateral and multilateral nonproliferation, disarmament, and arms control agreements and commitments," said Dujarric, adding that the Secretary-General believes that "the only way to eliminate all nuclear risks is to eliminate all nuclear weapons."

The statement comes after the leaders of the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, China and France have agreed that a "nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought." The so-called "nuclear five" are the only world nations recognized by the 1968 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as nuclear-armed.
