US retail sales down by 1.9% in December

Retail and food services sales in the United States noted a monthly decline of 1.9% in December to come in at $626.8 billion, below market expectations, the country's Census Bureau stated in its report published on Friday. On an annual level, the figure gained 16.9%.

Sales in retail trade fell by 2.1% in comparison to the month before but rose by 14.4% in contrast with the same period last year. Also year-on-year, gasoline stations' operations advanced by 41.0% and food services and drinking places' by 41.3%.

The Census Bureau added it has revised November 2021's general figure from 0.3% to 0.2%, or $639.1 billion.
