Musk wanted law firm to fire ex-SEC employee - report

Elon Musk's electric car company Tesla tried to make Cooley LLP, a law firm that represents it, fire one of its associates who earlier worked for the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Wall Street Journal reported.

According to sources familiar with the matter, in December, Tesla threatened to stop working with Cooley unless the lawyer in question is dismissed. However, the law firm refused to fire the lawyer and Tesla started taking steps to either replace Cooley or add additional counsel, while Musk's other company, SpaceX, stopped using Cooley for regulatory work.

Back in 2018, the lawyer that Musk wanted to be fired interviewed him as part of the SEC's investigation into his tweets on planning to Tesla private and claiming he had secured funding to do so. As a result of the probe, Musk resigned as Tesla chairman and agreed to pay a $20 million fine.
