Germany blocking Estonia from sending arms to Ukraine - officials

Officials from Estonia and Ukraine condemned on Friday Berlin for blocking Tallinn, its ally from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), from sending arms to Kiev by refusing to allow permissions for the export and transfer of German-made weapons to the crisis-stricken country.

Unlike the United States and some other members of NATO, Germany decided against sending weapons to Ukraine either directly or via a third country, such as Estonia. "Hopefully we will get the approval from Germany," Kristo Enn Vaga, adviser to Estonian Defense Minister Kalle Laanet, told the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). "Estonia has shown that we want to help Ukraine in practical terms in any way we can."

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov told the same publication that "Germany, they have a lot of hesitation to deliver to us." Berlin previously warned it might halt the certification of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in case Russia invades its neighbor.
