Report: China to expand cooperation with foreign chipmakers

The Chinese government plans to set up a "cross-border semiconductor work committee" with the aim of strengthening cooperation between China and major foreign chipmaking companies, Nikkei Asia reported on Tuesday, citing information received from unnamed sources and documents it has obtained.

The committee, which will be launched in the first half of 2022 and under supervision by China's Ministry of Commerce, will be looking to create stronger ties with Intel Corporation, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. from the US, Infineon Technologies AG from Germany, and an industrial group that includes Netherlands-based ASML Holding N.V. On the Chinese side, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) and Xiaomi Corporation and other companies, investment funds, and Chinese universities and academies will take part in planned partnerships.

Beijing is trying to establish a domestic semiconductor supply chain that would not be affected by sanctions by the United States, according to the report.
