Europe closes mostly lower after Ukraine, economic data

Shares on the major stock market indexes in Europe ended the session on Wednesday mostly lower, with investors monitoring the situation in Ukraine and digesting statements made by Western leaders on the crisis. On the economic front, the day was marked by earnings reports from Rio Tinto, Barclays, and Stellantis. The latest German consumer confidence data was also published. In addition, ECB Governing Council member Robert Holzmann favored two rate hikes before the end of 2022.

The DAX lost 0.42% at the close, with Hellofresh SE down by 4.78%. The CAC 40 fell 0.10%, while Renault SA decreased by 4.54%. The FTSE 100 was flat, as Evraz PLC dropped 12.69%.

The euro was down by 0.06% against the dollar at 5:28 pm CET, selling for $1.13179. In comparison, the pound lost 0.17% to go for $1.35610 at the same time.
