Putin tells Xi NATO ignored Russia's security concerns

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone call with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Friday, Chinese media reported.

During the conversation, Putin told Xi that Russia launched the military operation in Ukraine because NATO has long ignored Moscow's reasonable security concerns, repeatedly reneged on commitments and continued to advance military deployment eastward. However, he stressed Russia is open to starting high-level negotiations with Ukraine in an effort to resolve the crisis, which Xi supported.

China has been one of few countries to take Russia's side in the conflict with Ukraine, calling Russia's concerns legitimate and stressing Moscow has the right to make decisions in its own interests. Earlier today, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called Putin to sit with him at the negotiating table and "stop the death of people."
