US closes lower as Ukraine crisis intensifies

Major stock markets in the United States closed lower on Tuesday, with the Ukraine crisis in the center of attention.

Investors continued monitoring the situation in Europe and the effect of sanctions on Russia and the global economy. Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged US President Joe Biden to deliver a strong message on the invasion of Ukraine, as allies continue taking measures against the Kremlin.

The Dow Jones lost 1.77% or 598 points at the close, with American Express Co down by 8.51%. The Nasdaq 100 fell 1.63%, while Lucid Group decreased by 13.77%. The S&P 500 declined by 1.55%, as DXC Technology Co dropped by 11.59%.

The euro was down by 0.71% against the dollar at 3:58 pm ET, selling for $1.11308.
