US opens mostly lower after turbulent premarket

Shares on the major stock market indexes in the United States started the Monday session mostly in the red after commodities, markedly oil, gold, and palladium, soared to multi-year highs during the US premarket, prompted by the Ukrainian crisis.

Hikes of the commodity prices and sharp losses seen across the stock markets pared considerably amid news that the European Union is not ready to deprive itself of energy imports from Russia.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 0.35%, or 116 points, as the session started, with American Express down by 1.67%. The Nasdaq 100 was flat at the open. At the same time, the S&P 500 declined by 0.2%, as Viatris dropped 2.65% a minute later.

The euro surrendered 0.11% to the dollar at 9:29 am ET, selling for 1.09232.
