Lavrov: NATO lied straight to Russia's face

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday that NATO "lied straight to our [Russia's] face after it promised it won't expand eastward following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Speaking to the Serbian press, Lavrov accused the alliance of initially denying that it promised Russia it will not expand towards the east and later admitted it did but described its vow as just an "oral promise to appease" Moscow at the time. He added that NATO is not a defensive alliance as it claims, stressing its Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced the alliance's goal is to be in charge of global security.

The Russian top diplomat also accused NATO of seeking to "defend territories nobody wanted to attack" and looking to expand towards the Pacific and control the South China Sea.
