Amazon signs satellite launch deals with 3 firms

Amazon.com Inc. announced on Tuesday it has signed contracts with Blue Origin LLC, Arianespace SA, and the United Launch Alliance (ULA) to formally establish cooperation on Project Kuiper, the Seattle-based company's "initiative to increase global broadband access using a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO)."

In what the tech giant described as "the largest commercial procurement of launch vehicles in history," the parties agreed on up to 83 launches in the next five years with the goal of deploying Amazon's constellation that comprises 3,236 satellites.

"Project Kuiper will provide fast, affordable broadband to tens of millions of customers in unserved and underserved communities around the world," Amazon Devices & Services Senior Vice President Dave Limp commented. "We still have lots of work ahead, but the team has continued to hit milestone after milestone across every aspect of our satellite system."
