Nehammer: Austria, part of EU against Russian gas embargo

Vienna believes that suspending the imports of Russian gas is "not possible" at the moment, just like several other members of the European Union do, but stands firmly with the bloc when it comes to other sanctions against Moscow over its military operation in Ukraine, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer told CNN on Wednesday.

Speaking of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week, Nehammer said that he wanted "to look in President Putin's eyes and confront him with what I saw" during his visit to Ukraine. He stressed that "it's not easy for Putin to talk about war crimes," adding that Putin's position on whether those have taken place in Ukraine or not remains unclear.

Following his meeting with Putin, Nehammer underscored the need for the leaders of the EU to remain in contact with the Russian president over the situation in Ukraine. He also urged Putin to end the war and called for an international investigation into potential war crimes.
