Euro area inflation up to record 7.5% in April

The annual inflation rate in the Eurozone stood at a record high of 7.5% in April, according to a flash estimate published by the European Union's statistical office Eurostat on Friday.

The largest contributor to the annual euro area inflation was the energy sector, with prices surging 38% year on year, followed by food, alcohol and tobacco, up 6.4% on an annual basis.

Among member states, the highest inflation rates measured by the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices were recorded in Estonia, at 19%, and Lithuania, at 16.6%, while the lowest rates were observed in Malta, at 4.9%, and France, at 5.4%.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices were up 0.6% in the Eurozone.
