Hungary cannot support EU's ban on Russian oil

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto remarked on Wednesday that the European Union's recent proposal to impose restrictions on the import of Russian oil to Europe would undermine Hungary's energy supply.

The foreign minister explained that Budapest could consider agreeing on the oil embargo "if the transportation of crude oil by pipeline was an exception to the restrictions." Szijjarto added the European Union has provided a rather "short deadline" for countries to phase out the imports of Russian oil by the end of the year.

Earlier, Slovakian authorities have stated the country would comply with the EU's new sanctions against Russia, however, Bratislava has asked for a three-year transition from the Union.
