EC welcomes EU directive on cybersecurity

The European Commission published a statement on Friday, welcoming an agreement on the Directive on Security of Network and Information Systems (NIS 2 Directive) between the European Parliament and the EU Member States.

The NIS 2 Directive will strengthen the cybersecurity of the medium and large entities in various fields, including the economy, digital services, and the healthcare sector, as a result of the increasing degree of digitalization in the society, and the growing number of cyber threats across Europe. Executive Vice-President for a Europe Fit for the Digital Age Margrethe Vestager noted the directive represents a "breakthrough" in European digital strategy aimed at ensuring "citizens and businesses are protected."

Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton explained modernizing the rules of the NIS 2 agreement is of "paramount importance" for society and the economy as cyber-attacks have become more complex. Earlier, the EU had accused Russia of the cyberattack on Viasat underlining that such actions are "unacceptable."
