Finnish president informs Putin of plans to join NATO

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto spoke to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in a telephone conversation on Saturday, informing him of the country's plans to apply for NATO membership in the coming days, the President's Office announced.

"The conversation was direct and straight-forward and it was conducted without aggravations. Avoiding tensions was considered important", President Niinisto said. The Finnish President explained that Moscow's demands last year, which focused on stopping countries from joining NATO, and the recent Ukrainian crisis, "have altered the security environment of Finland."

Previously, Putin noted that the alliance's expansion to Sweden and Finland represents "the potential threats to Russia's security arising in this regard," while Moscow explained that its reaction to NATO's presence in the Baltic region would heavily depend on the organization's infrastructure established in the two countries.
