Hungary asks for solutions before oil embargo

Hungary's Justice Minister Judit Varga [pictured] argued on Monday that decisions on the Russian oil embargo must be made in the interests of all member states, underlining that the European Union should suggest "solutions" before applying "sanctions."

Varga said ahead of the ministerial meeting in Brussels that German Economy Minister Robert Habeck's remarks lack "the European values of cooperation based on a culture of consensus and mutual respect." She added that Budapest voiced its concerns over oil supplies in a "transparent" manner, emphasizing that the topic could not be referred to in an "exclusionary tone."

The Versailles Declaration, which was previously endorsed by EU leaders in early March, emphasizes that sanctions against Russian energy could only be imposed if each country's right to its own energy choice was respected, according to the justice minister.
