Russia, China aircraft enter S. Korea defense zone

Military aircraft belonging to Russia and China entered South Korea's air defense zone without notice, the Joint Chiefs of Staff of S. Korea told local media on Tuesday.

Two Chinese H-6 bombers entered the Korean Air Defense Identification Zone (KADIZ) at 7:56 am local time, moved to the East Sea, and then left the zone at 9:33 am. They were joined later by two Russian TU-95 bombers and two fighters, entering the air defense zone together at 9:58 am but making their exit at 10:15 am. However, four Chinese and two Russian warplanes were detected outside KADIZ at around 3:40 pm.

Seoul's military noted that there was no violation of the country's airspace. According to the Yonhap News Agency, the Joint Chiefs of Staff explained that it "deployed Air Force fighters to conduct tactical steps in preparation against potential accidental situations" before foreign aircraft entered the air defense zone.
