Russia protests ban on Kaliningrad goods transit

Russian Foreign Ministry stated on Monday that it summoned the Lithuanian Charge d'affaires Virginija Umbrasiene to protest Lithuania's decision to ban the rail transit of a number of goods through its territory to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. The measure was enforced on Saturday in line with sanctions against Russia imposed by the European Union.

The Foreign Ministry stated the act is viewed as "openly hostile" and as breaching Lithuania's international legal obligations. "If in the near future cargo transit between the Kaliningrad region and the rest of the territory of the Russian Federation through Lithuania is not restored in full, Russia reserves the right to take actions to protect its national interests," the ministry stated.
