33 senators urge Biden to protect access to abortion

A group of 33 Democratic senators wrote a letter to United States President Joe Biden urging him to "the full force of the federal government to protect access to abortion" across the country after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

"There is no time to waste," the senators warned. "Nearly half of the states already had laws in place to ban abortion or severely restrict access as soon as the Supreme Court decision came down," they added and urged Biden to take "bold action to protect the right to an abortion."

Earlier, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a landmark court ruling from 1973 that paved the way for legalized abortion in the country, thus allowing states to limit or ban abortion. Following the ruling, Biden slammed the move and insisted Democrats could restore the right to abortion as federal law if they secured a Congress majority in upcoming midterms.
