US to send $55M in aid to earthquake-hit Afghanistan

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on Tuesday that Washington will send humanitarian aid worth $55 million to those affected the most by the earthquake that hit Afghanistan on June 22 in addition to the immediate help its partners provided on the spot.

"This additional disaster relief assistance will reach people affected by the earthquake with critical relief items [...]. Assistance will be provided for water, sanitation, and hygiene supplies to prevent waterborne disease outbreak in the aftermath of this natural disaster," his statement read. "The US has an enduring commitment to the people of Afghanistan, and we welcome and encourage support from our international partners in this time of great need."

The earthquake that hit Afghanistan on June 22 caused the deaths of over 1,000 people and severe material damage. The White House expressed its sadness over the event and promised to provide the crisis-hit country with necessary assistance.
