CDC activates emergency center for monkeypox

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Tuesday that it has activated its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in response to the country's growing monkeypox outbreak.

The activation of the EOC will allow the agency to increase assistance in order to meet the emerging "challenges of the outbreak," while also complementing the ongoing work of CDC personnel. The agency warned that the any individual showing symptoms of the virus should consider testing, revealing that common symptoms include rash, fever, muscle aches, and lethargy.

Despite the reaffirmation by the World Health Organization that the monkeypox is "unlikely" to become a global pandemic, the rising number of cases has led the United States to order over 500,000 more monkeypox vaccine doses for delivery earlier this month.
