Xi reaffirms support for zero-COVID policy

Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Wednesday that the government's dynamic zero-COVID policy will remain in place "until the final victory [against the disease] is secured."

Delivering remarks in Wuhan, the epicenter of the first coronavirus outbreak in the world, he stressed that, if China had implemented "herd immunity" or a "hands-off approach," the country would have experienced a catastrophe. The government is prepared to suffer "temporary impacts" on the economy in order to keep people's lives and health out of "harm's way," Xi underlined, according to the Chinese state media.

"We are confident in our ability to strike a balance between COVID-19 response and economic and social development," the president noted.
