Putin not worried about Finland, Sweden joining NATO

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that he is not worried about Sweden and Finland joining NATO but noted Moscow will respond with countermeasures if NATO bases are deployed in the two Scandinavian countries.

"We don’t have anything that could worry us from the point of view of Finland and Sweden’s membership in NATO," Putin stated in response to journalists' questions. "If military contingents and infrastructure are deployed there, we will have to respond in a mirror manner and create the same threats for the territories from which threats are created to us," he added.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced this week the alliance is ready to welcome Finland and Sweden after Turkey agreed to support the move.
