Germany's retail sales down by 3.6% in May

Calendar and seasonally adjusted turnover in retail trade in real terms in Germany saw an annual decline of 3.6% in May, the country's Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) revealed in its report published on Thursday. On a monthly basis, the figure went up by 0.6%.

In nominal terms, the turnover in May advanced by 2.0% month-on-month and 4.1% year-on-year. The difference between the figure for real and nominal terms shows the high price increases in retail trade.

The retail sales of food, beverages, and tobacco products plunged by 6.4% in real terms in comparison to the same period the previous year but rose by 2.2% in nominal terms. The figure for non-food sectors grew by 5.3% in real terms and 12.0% in nominal terms. Meanwhile, the sales in internet and mail-order business plummeted by 10.5% in real terms and 5.7% in nominal terms.
