Beijing imposes new COVID lockdown in Xi'an

Beijing decided to impose a new COVID-related lockdown in the city of Xi'an in central China after it reported 18 new cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant since last Saturday, officials said on Tuesday.

"We must race against both time and the virus... to guard against all possible risks and hidden dangers, and decisively avoid an explosion in community spreading," the city's official Zhang Xuedong noted during a press conference, emphasizing Xi'an will now face "seven-day temporary control measures" to stop the spread of the virus. New restrictions include closures of schools, restaurants, and businesses, however, dining venues will still be able to provide takeaway services.

The city previously faced one of the longest stay-at-home restrictions in the country that lasted for one month at the end of last year.
