Canada becomes 1st to ratify Finland, Sweden NATO bids

Canada became the first country to offer formal backing to Finland and Sweden's NATO accession, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in a statement.

"This brings the two countries a step closer to full membership," he said. "Their membership will make NATO stronger." Trudeau went on to urge other member nations to take steps to ratify Helsinki and Stockholm's accession protocols in order for the two to be protected under the organization's defense clause that makes an attack on one member of the alliance an attack on the entire NATO.

Finland and Sweden applied to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in May, less than two months after Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine.
