New UK chancellor urges Johnson to resign

British Chancellor of the Exchequer Nadhim Zahawi published a letter on Thursday urging Prime Minister Boris Johnson to resign. Zahawi was only appointed to his post two days ago after Rishi Sunak's departure.

Zahawi explained that he privately advised Johnson to leave. "I am heartbroken that he hasn’t listened and that he is now undermining the incredible achievements of this Government at this late hour," he stated. "The country deserves a government that is not only stable, but which acts with integrity. Prime minister, you know in your heart what the right thing to do is, and go now."

Michelle Donelan, who replaced Zahawi as education secretary when he took over as chancellor, also resigned, bringing the total of government officials leaving over Johnson's conduct up to 54.
