Japan to ask for stable LNG supply from US, Australia

Japanese Industry Minister Koichi Hagiuda said on Tuesday he would ask the United States and Australia to provide a stable supply of liquified natural gas (LNG) to his country amid the energy crisis prompted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Japan is facing an unprecedented energy risk, given that it is a country of modest resources and its growing tensions with Russia when the global supply is strained and the prices sky-high.

The minister, who asked for alternative supplies, will travel to Sydney to attend a meeting of energy ministers on Wednesday. Other than Japan, officials from the US, Australia, and India will also participate in the meeting.
