Wall Street shares soar at open with data in focus

Major stocks on Wall Street opened Friday's session in the green territory after the release of the retail sales report revealed an increase compared to the previous reading. In addition, a preliminary report of the University of Michigan on consumer sentiment is set for release after the opening bell, with the Federal Reserve closely monitoring the country's data ahead of the July meeting.

The positive sentiment was prompted by Citigroup Inc. and the UnitedHealth Group's release of the second-quarter earnings that revealed a jump in their annual revenue. However, BlackRock Inc. and Wells Fargo and Co. reported a drop in their revenue, while the country's industrial production revealed a slight decline in June.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged by 1.58% or over 470 points at the opening bell. The UnitedHealth Group was the index's best performer, soaring by 3.58%. The Nasdaq 100 increased by 1.18% with eBay Inc. gaining 3.12%. The S&P 500 rose by 1.30%, with Citigroup Inc. jumping by 5.68%.

The euro gained 0.45% against the dollar, going for $1.00653 at 9:32 am ET.
