Wall Street closes in the red ahead of tech earnings

United States stock markets were below the flatline at the close on Tuesday as investors braced for earnings reports by Alphabet and Microsoft after the bell. Earlier in the day, UPS, GM, GE, 3M, Coca-Cola, Raytheon and McDonald's all released their latest quarterly figures. Moreover, economic data showed that consumer confidence in the country in July was the weakest in 17 months.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average index was down 0.71%, or 229 points, at the close with Walmart, its worst performer, falling 7.60%. The Nasdaq 100 contracted by 1.96% as Zscaler dropped 9.06% at the end of the trading session. The S&P 500 closed 1.15% lower. Fortinet dragged down the index, plummeting 7.77%.

The euro fell by 1.01% compared to the dollar to change hands for 1.01162 at 3:59 pm ET.
