China announces military drills amid Pelosi tensions

The Chinese military decided to hold exercises in the South China Sea from August 2 to August 6, amidst reports that United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi could visit Taiwan.

According to media reports, Pelosi was set to spend the night of August 2 in Taiwan, although an official visit was not on the schedule. However, entry to an area in the South China Sea will be closed due to military drills, as it was announced by the maritime administration in Qinglan.

Earlier today, Beijing threatened to take "strong measures" if Pelosi heads to Taiwan and Chinese fighter jets entered the Taiwan air defense zone.
