WH: Pelosi free to make her own decisions on Taiwan trip

United States National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby stated on Monday, at a press briefing, that United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi can make her own decisions regarding the Taiwan trip, as Congress is an "independent branch of government."

"Our Constitution beds the separation of powers, and this is well known to the PRC [People's Republic of China] given our more than four decades of diplomatic relations," said Kirby, adding that the speaker of the House "has the right to visit Taiwan." Kirby asserted that so far, Pelosi has not confirmed her travel plans.

Nevertheless, Kirby assured that "nothing has changed about our One China policy," saying that the US continues to oppose "any unilateral changes to the status quo from either side" and that Washington does "not support Taiwan independence."
